"Selamat Datang di
Bali" - Welcome to
Bali
Bali is so picturesque that you could be fooled into thinking it
was a painted backdrop: rice paddies trip down hillsides like
giant steps, volcanoes soar through the clouds, the forests are
lush and tropical, and the beaches are lapped by the warm waters
of the Indian Ocean.
But the paradise gloss has been manufactured and polished by the
international tourist industry rather than by the Balinese
themselves - who don't even have a word for paradise in their
language - and it pays scant regard to the political and
economic reality of life on Bali.

When to go: |
Just considering the
weather, the cooler dry season from April to October
is the best time to visit Bali. The rest of the year
is more humid, more cloudy and has more rainstorms.
The European summer holidays bring the biggest
crowds in July, August and early September . |
|
Clothing: |
Due to the hot humid
climate light clothes made of natural fiber
materials such as cotton should be worn. The wearing
of clothing made from artificial fiber materials
such as nylon is not recommended. Sweaters may be
required at night during the cool season or if
visiting the mountainous areas. |

Facts for the Traveler:
-
Visas:
Visitors from USA, Canada, UK, Australia, New Zealand,
and most of Western Europe don't need a visa to enter
Indonesia provided you have a ticket out of the country
and your passport has at least six months validity. At
the time of arrival, you will be issued with a tourist
card which is valid for a 60-day stay. Keep the card
with your passport as you'll have to hand it back when
you leave the country. It is not possible to get an
extension on a tourist visa, unless there is a medical
emergency or you have to answer legal charges. There are
visas, particularly a business visitor's visa, which may
be valid for a longer period. The immigration office is
in Denpasar. If you have to visit this office, make sure
you wear your most respectable clothes.
It is now confirmed that the
14 additional countries slated for visa on
arrival facility in Indonesia (TTG
Asia, July 8 issue) will be able to do so from August 1 2005.
This brings to 36 the number of countries eligible for the
facility. The 14 countries are
Austria, Belgium, India, Ireland, Kuwait, Luxembourg, Maldives,
Egypt, Portugal, Qatar, China, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Spain.
While the cost of visa
remains at US$10 and US$25, the validity is now 07 and 30 days.
-
Shopping:
Bali is famous for it's woodcarving and sculptures;
silver and gold jewelry, woven cloth, sarongs,
traditional and realist paintings, bone and coconut
shell carvings, antiques, basket wares and masks. More
recently garment manufacture has increased and excellent
designer garments are available cheaply. Tailoring is
cheap and quick. Except in fixed-price stores &
restaurants, shopping is done by bargaining, the
national sport. Only one rule, both buyer and seller
should end up satisfied, and not lose face! It can be
fun.
-
Electricity: Most hotels use 220 volts, 50 cycles
and a round, two-pronged slim plug. Bathroom shaver
plugs usually have a transformer switch. We suggest
taking an adaptor for your appliance.
