Switzerland
is a landlocked alpine country in Western Europe with an
area of 41,285 km² bordered by Germany, France, Italy,
Austria and Liechtenstein. Swiss confederation consists of
26 Cantons.
Switzerland comprises three basic topographical areas: the
Swiss Alps, the Swiss plateau or "middleland", and the Jura
mountains along the northwestern border with France. The
Alps are a high mountain range running across the
central-south of the country, comprising about 60 % of the
country's total area.
There are large lakes found here and the biggest Swiss
cities are in this area of the country. This region,
particularly the west, is also referred to as the "Seeland"
(the land of lakes) and the largest lake is Lake Geneva
(also called Lac Léman), in the West of Switzerland. The
Rhone River is the main tributary to Lake Geneva.
Swiss Alps: The Swiss
Alps are the central portion of the Alps mountain range that
lies within Switzerland. The Alps cover 61% of Switzerland's
surface area (41,285 km²) thus making her the second most
alpine country after Austria. The highest summit in
the Swiss Alps is the Dufourspitze, at 4,634metres (15,202
ft) near the Swiss-Italian border. The highest mountain
which lies entirely on Swiss territory is the Dom, at
4,545metres (14,911 ft).
Fresh mountain air, clear blue lakes and clean cultured
cities. If it’s skiing down glaciers or walking the hills,
touring or driving, from Zurich to the Alps, Geneva to
Lucerne, for chic European shopping or cosmopolitan café
culture, it’s all here for your dream holiday in
Switzerland.

Switzerland definitely
experiences seasons -- winter can bring a fair
amount of snow while summer can be sunny and sultry
but the weather is rarely extreme. Temperatures in
summer can climb to the 30s°C (90s°F) or even mid
30s°C (mid 90s°F).
June is the ideal month
for a tour of Switzerland, followed by either
September or October, when the mountain passes are
still open. During summer the country is usually
overrun with tourist traffic. September can be quite
rainy, but October offers sunny weather with
temperatures on their 20s°C (70s°F), which is
perfect for hiking in the Alps even in high
altitude. |
